FAQ
Questions about the project
What is the Saqr 2.0 Liquid Bulk Terminal project?
The Saqr 2.0 project is a greenfield multi-user liquid bulk terminal developed by RAK Ports Group in Ras Al Khaimah. The terminal is designed to support the growing demand for liquid bulk storage and handling in the GCC and will serve oil, petrochemicals and future energy carriers.
Why is Ras Al Khaimah a strategic location for a liquid bulk terminal?
Ras Al Khaimah is located directly on the main Arabian Gulf shipping lane and offers minimal sailing deviation compared to other UAE ports. This reduces fuel consumption, charter costs and emissions for vessels calling at the port.
What market opportunity does the terminal address?
The GCC faces a structural shortage of liquid bulk storage capacity while crude production exceeds refining capacity. At the same time, liquid bulk volumes in the region are growing at approximately 5.5% annually.
What types of vessels will the terminal accommodate?
The terminal will feature deep-water berths capable of accommodating Aframax, LR2 and Suezmax tankers. Future phases will also include single point mooring capabilities for VLCC vessels.
What is the planned capacity of the terminal?
Phase 1 of the project is designed for approximately 45 million tonnes per annum, with expansion potential up to 100 million tonnes per annum in Phase 2.
